Heated Clothes Airers: How to Dry Laundry Indoors Faster This Winter

Heated Clothes Airers: How to Dry Laundry Indoors Faster This Winter

MONSTER GROUP (UK) LIMITED |

By October the tumble dryer starts to feel like the only option and the radiators start to disappear under damp towels. Line drying is off the table, a standard airer takes days to get through a full wash, and the spare room slowly turns into a laundry room. If that sounds familiar, a heated clothes airer is the upgrade that makes indoor drying genuinely practical.

It looks much like an ordinary airer, but a built-in heating element warms the rails so clothes dry from the inside out rather than waiting on the air alone. Here's how Monster Shop's Heated Clothes Airer works for four everyday situations, and what to check before you buy.

1. The weekly family wash

What to look for: a full load for a family is a lot of fabric: school uniforms, towels, tops and bedding. You want an airer with enough rail space to take a decent portion of a wash in one go, and the strength to carry wet laundry, which weighs far more than it looks.

Why it works: the airer has 3 tiers of rails and a 15kg load capacity, so you can spread out a substantial load rather than stacking items on top of each other where they stay damp. Because the rails are heated, items placed on them begin drying straight away, rather than relying only on room air. Spacing garments out so air can move between them helps them dry faster.

2. Small flats, no garden and no dryer

What to look for: if you live in a flat or house without outdoor drying space, an airer has to earn its floor space. It needs to be big enough to be useful when it's out and slim enough to disappear when it isn't.

Why it works: assembled, it measures 112cm high, 62cm wide and 60cm deep, which is a manageable footprint for a spare room, hallway or living room corner. When you're done, it folds down to just 10cm deep, so it can slide behind a door, a wardrobe or a sofa. At 3.8kg it's light enough to carry between rooms without a struggle.

3. Delicates, gym kit and quick turnarounds

What to look for: not everything can go in a tumble dryer, and some things you need dry by tomorrow morning: gym kit, a work shirt, sportswear, a favourite jumper. You need gentle heat that gets things dry without the shrinking risk of high temperatures.

Why it works: the heating element runs at 50-55°C, reaching working temperature in about 15 minutes, which is warm rather than hot. It's a much gentler heat than a tumble dryer, so it suits items you'd rather not tumble, though you should always follow the care label on delicate fabrics. The included 6-clip peg hanger is handy for socks, underwear, gloves and other small items that otherwise slip through the rails.

4. Keeping heat in, and the room tidy

What to look for: open airers lose a lot of warmth to the surrounding room, and a laundry-covered airer in the corner of the lounge isn't anyone's idea of a good look.

Why it works: the airer comes with a zip-up cover that is designed to trap heat around your laundry and protect it from dust, while keeping wet washing out of sight. It runs from a standard 110-240V supply at 220W, and the 1.4m power cable means it doesn't need to sit right next to a socket. The grey finish is neutral enough to blend into most rooms.

Getting the best from a heated airer

  • Space items out. Leave gaps between garments so warm air can circulate. Overloading the rails slows everything down.
  • Wring or spin first. The better your washing machine's spin, the less water the airer has to deal with.
  • Use the cover. Zipping it over the laundry helps hold heat in around the clothes.
  • Ventilate the room. Drying laundry releases moisture into the air, so crack a window or use an extractor fan to stop it settling on cold walls and windows.
  • Check care labels. Even gentle heat isn't right for every fabric, so check labels on delicate items.

Heated clothes airers: the questions people actually ask

How does a heated clothes airer work? An electric element inside the frame warms the rails to around 50-55°C. Wet clothes draped over them dry from the warmth, rather than waiting on room air alone. This model is ready to use in around 15 minutes.

Is a heated airer cheaper to run than a tumble dryer? At 220W, it draws about 0.22kWh for every hour it runs. Multiply that by your electricity unit rate to estimate the cost per hour, then compare with the wattage of your tumble dryer, which will typically be much higher. Actual costs depend on your tariff and how long your washing takes to dry.

How much washing can it hold? It has 3 tiers and a 15kg load capacity, which is plenty for a typical mixed load. For best drying, spread items out rather than layering them.

Can I dry bedding and towels on it? Towels and smaller bedding items can be draped over the rails within the 15kg limit. Bulky items such as duvets take longer and are better spread out over a larger area, so don't expect them to dry as quickly as lighter garments.

Is it safe to leave on? Use it as instructed in the manual, keep the cable clear of the rails and out of foot traffic, and don't cover the airer with items that block the heated rails other than the supplied cover. Don't leave it running unattended for longer than is needed, and never use it outdoors.

Does it fold away? Yes. The 3-tier frame folds to 10cm deep, so it can be stored behind a door or in a cupboard when you're not using it.

What's included? The heated airer, a 6-clip peg hanger and a zip-up dust-proof cover.

Where to buy a heated clothes airer? Monster Shop stocks the Heated Clothes Airer with free UK shipping, and you can split the cost into 3 interest-free instalments with iwocaPay at checkout.

Prefer to dry overhead?

If floor space is tight and you want drying that lifts out of the way entirely, Monster Shop also has a range of ceiling pulley clothes airers in black, white and ivory, in lengths from 0.9m to 2.4m. They use warm air rising to the ceiling to dry laundry without taking up any floor space.
